5 Study Habits That Actually Move the Needle

Ask ten students what "studying hard" means and you'll get ten different answers, most of them wrong, or at least inefficient. After watching thousands of students move through ChloeZ, a few patterns keep showing up among the ones who make the fastest progress. None of these are secret hacks. They're just habits most people know about and few people actually do.

1. Retrieval beats re-reading, every time

Re-reading your notes feels productive because the material feels familiar. That familiarity is a trap — recognizing something and being able to recall it are completely different skills, and only one of them shows up on an exam. Closing the book and trying to explain a concept from memory, even badly, does more for retention than three passes of highlighting.

2. Study in the format you'll be tested in

If your exam is multiple choice, drilling essay questions builds the wrong muscle. Use CBT-style mock exams to practice under the actual format and time pressure you'll face — it's uncomfortable at first, which is exactly why it works.

3. Short, focused sessions beat marathon ones

Concentration has a shelf life. A 25-minute focused block with a real break beats two exhausted hours where the last 90 minutes barely register. If you haven't tried the Pomodoro Technique, it's worth a shot.

4. Space it out, don't cram it in

Reviewing something once, then again three days later, then again a week after that, builds a much stronger memory than reviewing it five times in one sitting. This is the whole idea behind spaced repetition, and it's why flashcard review schedules matter more than flashcard quantity.

5. Track what you don't know, not just what you do

It's tempting to keep reviewing what you're already good at — it feels great and confirms progress. The actual gains come from ruthlessly identifying your weak topics and spending disproportionate time there. A weekly practice test with a proper score breakdown is the fastest way to find out what those topics are.
